The Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP) is the right route for you if you have a degree (or higher qualification such as a Post Graduate Diploma, Masters, PhD).

With a starting salary of £23,367 for the DHEP and a fully funded qualification.  Assuming satisfactory performance, your salary will rise to £24,780 in your second year and £25,902 in your third. This increases each year, and within seven years of service you can expect to be earning around £41,130. About the DHEP

During your training as an officer you will also earn a graduate diploma in Professional Policing Practice, which will be recognised internationally. Your formal training will take place alongside your practical work in one of West Midlands Police many policing teams across the West Midlands. After an initial training period, you’ll get your uniform, join a team, and begin two years of practical learning that will shape your policing career.

Lots of your learning will completed ‘on the job’ and digitally, with your face-to-face classroom style learning based in Birmingham; there’s no need to travel to Staffordshire University’s campus. As you’re completing a level 6 qualification there is an expectation that some learning will be completed in your own time.

When you’re not studying you’ll be working alongside your colleagues on a variety of policing teams being the face of West Midlands Police in local communities, on either a neighbourhood policing team, a response team or on an investigation team helping to solve some of the most serious crimes and catch those responsible.

Am I eligible?

In summary, to be eligible for this route you will have achieved:

  • A Degree (Level 6) or above in any subject at any grade
  • OR be in the final academic year of your degree. Unfortunately, if you do not achieve your degree you will not be eligible for the DHEP route but may be able to transfer your application to the Degree Apprenticeship route (PCDA) dependant on qualifications.

Academic Qualifications:

When you apply for the role you must attach your qualification certificate(s) to your application; if you’re applying in your final year of study West Midlands Police’ll require a letter from your University to confirm you’re currently studying for a degree and the estimated dates of completion.

Age – How old you are doesn’t determine whether you’ll be a great officer, so West Midlands Police are happy to receive applications from people aged 17 or above. Please note you cannot start as a Police Officer until you are 18.

Nationality – You must be a British Citizen, European Economic Area (EEA) National, a Commonwealth Citizen or Foreign National with no restrictions on your stay in the UK. You will be required to share your proof of work share codes with West Midlands Police.

Residency – Have been a resident in the UK for three years immediately prior to application. Where applicants have been a resident abroad due to serving in the British Armed Forces or on UK Government Service, they are considered to be a UK resident.

Cautions and conviction – Ideally, you shouldn’t have a criminal conviction or cautions record. If you do have one, acceptance will depend on the age and nature of the offence. West Midlands Police are unable to state whether your convictions record will affect your application before you apply. This will be determined from the full and confidential information provided during the recruitment and selection process.

Vetting – Due to the nature of policing, it’s essential that West Midlands Police conduct rigorous vetting checks on successful applicants before they can join the programme. These checks will include personal details taken from you as well as from close family members and significant others.

Financial position – It’s important that you are not under pressure from un-discharged debts or liabilities and that you can manage loans and debts sensibly.

Tattoos – West Midlands Police know some people like to express themselves with body art, however anyone who has a tattoo and / or piercing which could be reasonably interpreted as offensive to any religion or belief, or is in any way discriminatory, violent or intimidating, will not be accepted.  In line with the College of Policing’s national guidance West Midlands Police will carefully consider the size, nature and prominence of visible tattoos and piercings to determine if they are acceptable.

Start dates and annual leave:

For those applying now, West Midlands Police anticipate a start date during late 2022 / early 2023. Due to the nature of the role and your training programme, during the first 31 weeks you will only be able to take 2 weeks annual leave and these will be allotted to you. West Midlands Police cannot guarantee annual leave requests will be approved outside of this time. On your application West Midlands Police ask you to let West Midlands Police know if you have any pre-booked annual leave as this may affect when you’re able to start.
