On Saturday Elon Musk reveals a humanoid AI robot at his Tesla AI Day. On that event, he expressed a Prototype walking on stage and waving. He is looking to future beyond vehicles.

Tesla revealed a prototype of a humanoid "Optimus" robot that features AI software and sensors with its cars' Autopilot driver assistance. "This prototype can do more than what was shown live" - Elon Musk (CEO, Tesla).

Musk predicted it could hit a price of "probably less than $20,000" and later, in a Q&A session, explained that Tesla is very good at building the AI and the actuators necessary for robotics based on the experience of producing drive units for electric cars.

The billionaire has said a robot business will be worth more than its cars, hoping to expand beyond self-driving vehicles that have not yet become a reality despite his repeated promises.

“Our goal is to make a useful humanoid robot as quickly as possible” - Elon Musk (CEO, Tesla).

Musk said currently humanoid robots were “missing a brain”, saying they don’t have the intelligence to navigate the world by themselves, and they were also very expensive and made in low volume.

Musk claimed the robot could be transformative for civilization. The robot displayed Friday, despite its limitations compared to competitors, was significantly ahead of what Tesla revealed a year ago when a person jumped on stage in a robot suit and danced around.

Tesla is not the first automaker to develop a humanoid robot. Along with Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics, Honda worked on robots dubbed “Asimo” for nearly 20 years. In its final form, Asimo was a child-size humanoid robot capable of untethered walking, running, climbing and descending stairs, and manipulating objects with its fingers.
