Overview

Operates a heavy tractor-trailer truck in transporting wastewater sludge for disposal as a primary assignment and is exposed to hazardous conditions at the disposal site; and performs other duties as required.
 
Distinguishing  Characteristics:
 
This class differs from that of the Heavy Truck Driver series in that the Wastewater Treatment Plant Truck Driver regularly operates and maintains a tractor trailer truck to dispose of the wastewater treatment plant's sludge under hazardous conditions at the landfill site, whereas classes in the Heavy Truck Driver series are responsible for operating and maintaining trucks as a primary work assignment in transporting a variety of materials and/or equipment.

Examples of Duties

The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.

  • Hauls sludge to disposal sites; 

  • Operates lift gates of attached bins, and other equipment as may be towed by, attached, or mounted on trailers; 

  • May operate other heavy trucks to haul other materials used at the wastewater treatment plant; 

  • Keeps tractor trailer truck and other equipment supplied with gas, oil, water, and air; performs minor emergency repairs as necessary and reports major defects and malfunctions; 

  • May operate other vehicles or equipment such as a dump truck, a Bobcat loader, a backhoe, a forklift, a boom truck or crane as an incidental assignment;

  • Performs simple maintenance work or other unskilled or semi-skilled labor as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience: Two years of experience operating a heavy truck; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

License Requirement: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A; and a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate.

Knowledge of: the uses, methods of operation and capacities of heavy trucks; general maintenance practices as they relate to motorized equipment; laws, ordinances, rules and regulations governing the operation of motor vehicles on streets and highways; hazards and safety precautions applicable to the operation of a truck; local geography.

Ability to: operate a heavy truck skillfully and safely; understand and observe traffic laws and rules; make minor emergency repairs to truck; recognize mechanical and operational defects in equipment; understand and follow oral and written instructions; perform semi-skilled and labor tasks; work harmoniously with others; handle weights and loads.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Special Working Conditions: Exposure to hazardous conditions; may also be subject to shift, weekend and holiday work as required.

SKILLS ASSESSMENT:

The above examination is being given on an open-competitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.
