In this role you, will be essential in ensuring ESD is providing a safe workplace where employees can perform their duties to serve Washington citizens. You will be responsible for identifying possible workplace hazards and offering technical expertise to eliminate or reduce those hazards. While conducting site visits, you will verify compliance with safety regulations and follow-up to make sure any noncompliance are corrected. You are going to be essential in advancing ESD’s strategic plan by identifying and working to dismantle barriers to equity, diversity, and while positively influencing others to do so as well.

Some of your daily tasks:

  • You will coordinate with the Assistant Safety Program Manager and/or the Facilities & Safety Director in assuring compliance with agency security policies and administration.
  • You will communicate with staff and leadership through memos and reports. You will meet with internal/external agencies and vendors on security procedures, equipment purchases or repairs; represents security at agency meetings.
  • Prepares and presents oral and written reports in consultation with Assistant Safety Program Manager; develops various reports, maintains and updates the agency security manual; maintains and updates the security guard desk manual; develops, maintains, and updates security policies and operating procedures.
  • Manages private security contracts related to ESD locations in Olympia and Lacey; is the point of contact for staff and contractors; monitors performance to ensure compliance with contract requirements.
  • Will be the main point of contact when it comes to inventory, control measures, granting/denying access, maintenance of the system as well as making employee badges.
  • Will be the point of contact when it comes to access and emergency evacuation/or "Blue Light" system maintenance, problem solving, and coordinating with vendor for solutions.
  • You will conduct safety studies and analysis in consultation with Assistant Safety Program Manager; assists in the development of disaster plans, emergency response and evacuation plans/procedures, hazard reporting/identification procedures, local occupational safety, and health policy
  • You will attend ESD safety committee meetings as one of the subject matter experts.
  • You will monitor & identify unsafe work practices and provide corrective recommendations.
  • You will assist safety committees as needed in planning and conducting emergency response drills.
  • You will work with the Office of Facilities and individual offices to assist and respond to building security concerns.
  • You will review and follow up on security incident reports.

Required Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health, safety studies, natural science, business or public administration, education, or allied field.


One year of professional experience in the administration of occupational safety and health programs. Additional qualifying experience, as listed above, will substitute, year for year, for education. Possession of a license as a Certified Safety Professional will substitute for education.


A combination of education and relevant experience.

Education to Experience Equivalences:

Associate Degree = 2 years | Bachelor Degree = 4 years | Masters or Higher = 5 years

Desired Qualifications:
Certified First Aid/CPR trainer.

Additional Requirements of Employment:
  • Must be able to pass an Unemployment Insurance (UI) Claim & Benefit Information Review.
  • Ability to travel statewide as needed.
