If you are not familiar with how our in-training works, here is a simple breakdown. After selected, a detailed training will help you navigate through the program successfully. For the next 18 months, you will perfect your communications skills, ability to negotiate, and other investigative methods in resolving revenue collection activities on delinquent accounts. You will also provide advice, instruction, and training to a diverse customer base. In addition to the above, the list below are other responsibilities associated with a successful completion of the in-training plan and a successful advancement to RA2:

  • Independently identifies, investigates, registers, and assesses avoided or evaded excise and/or use taxes from unregistered businesses, and owners of vehicles, vessels, aircraft, and other types of personal property. This includes the location and self-generation of cases or assignments.
  • Comprehends and utilizes complex state tax laws (RCW) and rules (WAC), tax interpretation letters, orders of determination, and departmental policies and procedures to resolve questions, concerns, and objections.
  • With minimal supervision, composes appeal responses that serve as legal briefs summarizing the Department’s case in tax appeals.
  • Takes collection action against non-compliant taxpayers, which can include tax warrants, bank/wage garnishments and revocation of business registration certificates.
  • Conducts fieldwork and investigation on delinquent accounts at taxpayer places of business, job sites, and residence.
  • Continuously records contact histories and taxpayer information throughout entire process on appropriate agency systems.
  • Assists taxpayers/representatives with business registration, guidance on completing tax returns, and contacting other agencies when appropriate.


To qualify as a Revenue Agent 2 (range 50 - $4282 - $5756):

Two years' experience as a Revenue Agent within the Department of Revenue.

To qualify as a Revenue Agent 2 (in-training) (range 45 - $3796 - $5088):

Bachelor’s degree in business or related field, public administration, communications, finance, economics, political science, criminal justice, law, sociology, or psychology (degree must be from an accredited college or university by the U.S. Department of Education and Council for Higher Education Accreditation [CHEA])


Two years as a Tax Service Representative, Tax Information Specialist, or other tax collection experience in the Department of Revenue

Experience may be substituted, year for year for education in any of the following areas:

  • Experience directly responsible for collecting or attempting to collect debts owed or due from an individual or any kind of business entity.

  • Experience in law enforcement, adjustment of claims, or investigations involving personal background, business practices or fraud.

*The successful candidate must also possess clear communication skills and effective use of technologies (Excel and Word) necessary to perform the job duties.*
