The key functions of the Veterans Education Unit (State Approving Agency) are to evaluate programs of education and training and to support the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs by conducting Risk-based and other Compliance Surveys at facilities for which veterans have been utilizing GI Bill benefits. Veteran training approval consists of evaluating programs and facilities for approval/disapproval, liaison activities, technical assistance, and annual coordination with Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), the U.S. Department of Labor, and other agencies to ensure compliance with federal regulations, and state and local requirements. On-site review of all prospective facilities is required before veteran training approval can be assigned.

While position is remote, all work must be performed in Michigan. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate to Michigan to perform the duties of this position. Position also requires extensive travel/driving throughout the state year-round within the position’s work coverage area.  The position's work coverage area will be determined on the select candidate and what works best for them and the entire team. Employees will be provided computers to perform state work.  Phones may also be provided for necessary communications. When working remotely, employees will be responsible for providing other components of a remote office at their own expense, including:
 
  • A secure work location that allows privacy and prevents distractions.
  • A high-speed internet connection of at least 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload.
  • Suitable lighting, furniture, and other utilities.
  • Free of hazards that might cause injury.

Required Education and Experience

Education

Possession of a master's degree in education or higher education administration.

ExperienceHigher Education Consultant 11

No specific type or amount is required.



Higher Education Consultant 12

One year of post-master's administrative or consultative experience in the field of higher education, including one year equivalent to a Higher Education Consultant 11.

Higher Education Consultant P13

Two years of post-master's administrative or consultative experience in the field of higher education, including one year equivalent to a Higher Education Consultant 12.


Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be evaluated on an individual basis.

Alternate Education and Experience

Higher Education Consultant 11 - P13

Possession of a bachelor's degree in education combined with a master's degree in a subject matter area of higher education may be substituted for the education requirement.



Higher Education Consultant 12 - P13

Five years of college-level teaching, admissions, financial assistance, or counseling experience may substitute for one year of the experience requirement.



Possession of a doctorate degree in education or in higher education administration may substitute for one year of the experience requirement.

Salary for this position is entirely federally funded.  Under federal law an employee whose salary is entirely federally funded may not be a candidate for public office in a partisan election.
