Operates heavy motorized construction equipment as a major work assignment in transporting materials, supplies and equipment and excavating and grading earth in the construction, repair and maintenance of highways, buildings, and other governmental installations or projects; and performs other duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for operating heavy motorized construction equipment such as tractor-trucks with various trailer attachments including tank trailer of over 1,200 gallon capacity; D-6 bulldozer with backhoe attachment; D-7, D-8, TD-18 or other similar size bulldozers with or without attachments; No. 12 motor patrol grader or other similar size graders; over 10 ton tandem rollers; four-wheeled scrapers or carryalls with a 6 to 10 cubic yard capacity.

Examples of Duties

The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.

  • Hauls rock, heavy building materials, supplies and heavy construction equipment or machinery; 
  • Loads and unloads trailer using fingerlift, crane or loader; stockpiles crushed rock, dirt, cinders and other material; 
  • Makes cuts and fills to establish lines and grades; spreads dirt, crushed rock and other materials, excavates and cuts trenches, banks, road shoulders and gutters;
  • Prepares or maintains roadbed by scraping and filling with dirt or other material; tears old roads using scarifier; 
  • Prepares site for buildings and other structures; 
  • Rolls base course and does finished rolling of highways and roads; 
  • Operates large truck-tractor of over 10 ton capacity and hauls water, oil and bulk liquids or transports and tows a lowbed trailer; 
  • Makes time, equipment and other reports; 
  • May perform laboring tasks when not operating equipment; may make emergency repairs to equipment; 
  • Checks and replenishes fuel, oil and water; may lubricate and service equipment; 
  • Cleans and washes equipment; 
  • May operate other construction equipment for training purposes.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of work experience in the operation of equipment applicable to positions in this class or certification by a licensed trainer of the ability to satisfactorily operate equipment applicable to positions in this class.

License Requirement: Possession of the appropriate Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B) with applicable endorsements and a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate.

Knowledge of: operation of motorized vehicle representative of this class; laws, ordinances, rules and regulations governing the operations of motor vehicles; hazards and safety practices of operating motorized equipment; maintenance needs of motorized equipment representative of this class; and construction safety practices.

Ability to: operate and maintain motorized equipment representative of this class; apply skill and judgment in operating motorized equipment representative of this class; make emergency repairs to equipment representative of this class; drive skillfully, courteously and safely according to traffic laws and ordinances; service motorized equipment; give and receive oral and written instructions; perform construction and maintenance operations using the equipment representative of this class without close supervision.

The above examination is being given on an open-competitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.
