Overview

This is a remote, full-time, and permanent position.

Senior Epidemiologist

As the Senior Epidemiologist, you will lead and direct the Data Science and Modernization Unit, supervising a team of data scientists. You will serve as a subject matter expert in data science and public health informatics, overseeing the development, maintenance, and enhancement of data systems. Your work will support public health surveillance, program evaluation, policy making, and more. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on public health through innovative data science and informatics strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and oversee improvements to health information systems in CHS.
  • Provide expert support in informatics, including programming, troubleshooting, and system operation during emergencies.
  • Develop and implement new AI and machine learning technologies to enhance CHS operations.
  • Manage efforts to improve interoperability and migrate data systems to the cloud.
  • Apply epidemiology, data science, and informatics principles to improve data collection and analysis.
  • Conduct statistical analysis and interpret data for reports and presentations.
  • Write grant and IRB applications to support data science initiatives.
  • Engage stakeholders to manage changes resulting from data science activities.
  • Document work processes and collaborate with public health stakeholders.
  • Develop and monitor performance measures for data services.
  • Set vision and expectations for the Data Science Unit.
  • Plan and oversee unit work, focusing on quality and visibility.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring for staff growth and engagement.
  • Manage personnel matters including recruitment, evaluation, and corrective action.
  • Guide the work of data science specialists and epidemiologists.
  • Conduct performance reviews and maintain position descriptions.
  • Ensure staff access to training and technology to meet customer needs.
  • Contribute to CHS leadership as part of the expanded leadership team.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • You must meet one of the following options, in addition to meeting the specified criteria listed below.
    1. Option 1: An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience to option 2 & 3.
  1. Option 2: A Master’s Degree in epidemiology, data science, public health, statistics, social sciences, or a closely-related field with coursework in epidemiology, data science, statistics, research, research design, biostatistics, or closely related areas. AND 3+ years of experience in epidemiology, data science, public health data analysis, or a closely-related field.
  1. Option 3: PhD in epidemiology, data science, public health, statistics, social sciences, or a closely-related field with coursework in epidemiology, data science, statistics, research, research design, biostatistics, or closely related areas.
  • 2+ years of experience using quantitative and data management software such as R, Python, and Julia.
  • 3+ of experience working with large SQL-based databases.
  • 3+ of experience managing or analyzing health-related data, including disease surveillance data, vital records data, hospital administrative data, and healthcare claims data.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and manage R packages.
  • Demonstrated expertise in interoperability modernization efforts, including but not limited to FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of biostatistics and mathematical principles, such as Generalized Linear Models and Generalized Additive Models.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical distributions commonly used in death rate modeling, including the Poisson distribution, over-dispersed Poisson distribution, and multivariate normal distribution.

Preferred Experience and Desired Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience using quantitative and data management software such as R, Rust, Python and/or Julia. 
  • 4+ experience working with large SQL-based databases or data warehouses.
  • Demonstrated experience automating data transfer, processing, and analysis. 
  • Training in Public Health Informatics
  • Training in Data Science techniques such as machine learning and AI development/implementation

Location and Flexibility 

This is a remote position available to applicants residing anywhere in Washington State, as well as those living near the Oregon/Washington border and the Idaho/Washington border. Attending events or working In-office is rarely required and would be scheduled in advance at the DOH office located in Tumwater, WA.
