Overview

Kind of Work

Highly responsible administrative, inspectional and law enforcement work in securing compliance with city fire prevention regulations and ordinances and directing departmental investigations as directed by the Superintendent; and related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

EITHER: A Bachelor’s degree* in Fire Science or a related field from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of fire prevention and/or suppression experience.
 
OR: An Associate’s degree* in Fire Science or a related field from an accredited college or university and seven (7) years of fire prevention and/or suppression experience.
 
OR: A Bachelor or Associate degree* in any field from an accredited college or university and ten (10) years of fire prevention and/or suppression experience.
 
 * Prior to appointment, the hiring agency is required to verify education and certifications claimed by the applicant to qualify for this classification. If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency prior to their start date in this job classification.
 
Important: If hired, applicants must obtain by the end of the probationary period either an ICC Certification as a Fire Plans Examiner or certification as a Fire Inspector I .  All Fire Inspector I certifications must be IFSAC (International Fire Service Accreditation), Pro Board (International Accreditation for Fire Service Organizations) or Louisiana FETA (Louisiana Fire & Emergency Training Academy) sealed. 
 
No probationary period may last longer than one (1) year.  If employees do not successfully complete the required course by the end of their probationary period, they must wait one (1) year from the end of their probationary period or successfully complete the certification in order to be considered for reinstatement to this position.
 

Kind of Examination

A rating of training and experience, weighted 100%.  All related previous experience will be considered for qualification purposes; however. credit on the rating of training and experience will only be given for experience gained within the last ten (10) years.
 
This is an original entrance examination.
