Overview

Under close supervision, the Communications Cable Installer installs, diagnoses, and maintains voice and data communications cable, circuits, terminals, and related computer and data communications equipment. This position typically reports to Local Area Network (LAN) Specialist.

Typical Tasks

  • Diagnoses, analyzes, and resolves simple to moderately complex communications cable and equipment problems; assists the LAN Specialist with the more complex projects and communications cable and equipment problems;
  • Installs, moves, and upgrades communications cable and equipment;
  • Reviews change notices for information updates of changes that were made to communications environments in order to assess the impact on customers;
  • Creates and maintains cable and equipment design documents for each site;
  • Attends training on hardware and software products and technology updates to maintain working knowledge;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the attainment of the following knowledge and abilities:

Note: The knowledge and abilities required to perform this function are typically acquired through training and experience equivalent to possession of one (1) year of experience installing voice and data cabling.

Knowledge of:

  • Wide area networks (WANs), LANs, telephone cable, and communications equipment;
  • Cable installation techniques;
  • Diagnostic tools and repair equipment used to resolve communications problems;
  • Cable products and technology.

    Ability to:
  • Analyze and resolve communications cable and equipment problems;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Use small hand tools, communications test equipment, and computer terminals;
  • Read simple electronic drawings and diagrams, basic computer system operations documentation, and other related instructions;
  • Distinguish color-coded wires;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal support units, customers, and vendors.

    Special Requirements:
  • Willingness and ability to work irregular hours and be on-call 24 hours a day;
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License upon appointment;
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds regularly.
