Communications Consultant

You will use qualitative and quantitative data from multiple sources to research, plan, implement and execute communications plans for your respective teams, programs and projects. You will develop narratives, produce messaging and run campaigns to improve understanding and awareness of ESD’s programs. You will deliver clear, consistent and customer-centric communications that are essential to provide Washington’s diverse communities better access to our services. In this role, you will collaborate with partners and subject matter experts to ensure accuracy and efficacy in our deliverables. 

Some of what you'll enjoy doing:

  • Develop and execute communications plans and content strategies. 
  • Work cross-divisionally to direct, plan, write and oversee the production of content across multiple platforms, channels and programs. 
  • Reinforce and help reimagine the agency’s communications, promoting more equitable access to – and understanding of – ESD’s programs. 
  • Promote economic resilience for individuals and communities across the state by reducing confusion for the customer through clear communication. 
  • Work with the communications team to identify creative and innovative techniques to be more precise, inclusive, plain-spoken and consistent. 
  • Use research and data to understand our customers, their needs and their pain points when it comes to our communication. 


  • Three years of direct professional experience in communications, public relations or marketing.
  • OR Two years of recent direct professional experience in communications, public relations, marketing or government relations AND 3+ years in related fields such as training and education, strategic planning, project management or customer service (including retail and food industry).


  • The incumbent is a highly collaborative strategic thinker and expert communicator who demonstrates these competencies in writing and interpersonally.
  • They are well-versed in strategic or operational communications planning and executing on deliverables for web, mass email platforms, social media and print.
  • They have experience creating, updating and managing web content. They write in and edit for plain talk.
  • They support maintenance for and follow standard operating procedures.
  • They collaborate with multiple stakeholders to co-create communications, public relations or marketing deliverables.
  • They manage their workload with transparency.
  • They demonstrate cultural competency and are committed to ongoing development of equity, diversity and inclusion competencies.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
