The County of Santa Barbara is currently accepting applications to fill one full-time vacancy.  The current vacancy is located in the Sheriff’s Office.
 
We are also establishing one employment listfor future vacancies in the General Services Department, Social Services Department, and Sheriff's Office.  Please make sure you select the departments and locations that you are willing to accept current and future employment.
 
Note: Applicants who are interested in working with the Sheriff's Office must be willing to be based out of any location within the County.

THE POSITION:  Under direction, supervises a staff of skilled and semi-skilled workers in maintenance tasks, and may supervise contract employees performing janitorial and custodial duties; performs complex maintenance tasks; and performs related duties as required.
 
Positions assigned to the Sheriff’s Office and General Services Department may be required to perform duties inside a locked facility and to interact with hostile, occasionally derisive individuals.

The work schedule for this position will depend upon the needs of the department, which may include working on the weekends, holidays, off hours, and on-call shifts.

Examples of Duties

  1. Makes periodic inspections of assigned facilities to determine condition;
  2. Diagnoses problems and initiates necessary action;
  3. Plans and schedules routine maintenance; establishes work priorities; issues work orders; prepares sketches, plans, and carries out remodeling projects; estimates materials and labor costs for remodeling, alterations, and installation projects; orders and issues tools, equipment, supplies, and supervises maintenance thereof;
  4. Maintains materials and equipment inventories;
  5. Performs complex repair and maintenance tasks;
  6. Supervises a staff of skilled and semi-skilled workers in such maintenance duties as painting, carpentry, masonry, cement work, and general upkeep involving structures, furnishings, equipment, floor coverings, acoustical ceiling, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical, and related systems;
  7. Trains, instructs, and assigns subordinates, and inspects completed work; trains and evaluates staff;
  8. Maintains time and cost records;
  9. Schedules vacation, relief, and emergency coverage; ensures that safety standards and regulations are observed.

Employment Standards

  • Three years of journey-level experience in construction and/or maintenance work, including one year of experience in a specialty building trade (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc.) and as a leadworker or supervisor; OR,
  • A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Additional Requirement:  Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License may be required for some positions.
 
Knowledge of:  building maintenance and repair methods, materials, tools, and equipment; the operation and repair of building mechanical and electrical systems; housekeeping and janitorial tasks and standards; safety standards and regulations.

Ability to:  plan, schedule, train, and supervise the work of others; perform complex repair and maintenance tasks; understand and follow through under general directions, and/or on own initiative; maintain records and prepare simple reports; coordinate building and maintenance activities within the division and with other divisions and departments; learn and apply principles and practices of supervision; learn contract administration.
