Overview

IMMEDIATE VACANICES:

Maintains, repairs and overhauls a variety of gasoline and diesel driven automotive equipment, including construction equipment; and performs other related duties as required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics:
 
This is the journey level class in the Automotive Repair and Maintenance series.  This class differs from that of Automotive Mechanic Helper in that the Automotive Mechanic I performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of all types of gasoline and diesel powered automotive equipment, including construction equipment, and may occasionally supervise other Automotive Mechanics or helpers; whereas the Automotive Mechanic Helper assists a skilled mechanic by performing a variety of routine manual tasks or performs designated maintenance and repair tasks for the purpose of learning.

Examples of Duties

The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class.  The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.

  • Diagnoses motor knocks, noises, or mechanical failures.
  • Removes, repairs, overhauls, and installs gasoline or diesel engines.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces defective mechanical units.
  • Times camshaft and ignition.
  • Adjusts connecting rods and main bearings.
  • Repairs and overhauls major units including brake systems, transmissions, differentials, and front and rear axles.
  • Overhauls steering mechanisms and drive shafts.
  • Grinds valves.
  • Determines needed repair parts.
  • Road tests equipment after making repairs.
  • Makes body and fender and other similar repairs.
  • May assign tasks to other mechanics and supervise the work of helpers.
  • May perform oxyacetylene or electrical welding in connection with repair work on automotive/construction equipment, jet skis, park playground equipment, etc.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and successful completion of apprenticeship training or four years of experience repairing automotive equipment under a journey mechanic.

License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (equivalent to Hawaii Type 3).

And as required by specific position, prior to the completion of probation, a Commercial Drivers License (Class A or B) with appropriate endorsements, a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate, and a State of Hawaii DOT Safety Inspector Certification.

Knowledge of:  theory and principle of the internal combustion engine; the principles of electricity as applied to the electrical systems of automotive equipment; the use of hydraulic oil presses, lathes, gauges, gear or bearing pullers, sanding machines, spray guns, testing equipment and other mechanical implements used in the trade; the occupational hazards and precautionary measures applicable to the trade.

Ability to:  locate and adjust mechanical defects in gasoline and diesel driven automotive equipment; learn the maintenance and repair of non-automotive equipment such as rotary and centrifugal pumps, air compressors, lawn mowers and air-powered construction equipment; make repairs using modem tools, equipment and procedures; do welding and simple body and fender repairs; interpret and work from rough sketches or blueprints as well as from oral and written instructions; plan assignments and direct the work of others as needed; operate motorized equipment.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

SKILL ASSESSMENT:

The above examination is being given on an open-competitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.
