Many employers list jobs on LinkedIn and prefer the platform over other popular job boards given the size of the potential applicant pool and LinkedIn’s advanced filter options. So, it is an excellent idea to upload your resume to your LinkedIn profile.
While your LinkedIn profile and your resume share several similarities, they’re not the same. Your LinkedIn should display your broad career history and connections to people, companies, and interest groups. Your resume should be a tailored document with a clear job target. Since your LinkedIn profile and your resume are different, you may want to upload your resume to your LinkedIn profile.

How to Add Your Resume to LinkedIn
There are various options for tying your CV to your LinkedIn profile; the best method for you depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Take a look at these options, alongside our evaluation of the pros and cons of uploading your CV to LinkedIn in the first place.
Option 1: Upload your CV to your profile
A CV uploaded directly to your profile is not used when you apply for jobs from LinkedIn, but it can be seen and downloaded by everyone who views your page. To add your CV this way:
- Log on and select the option to view your profile. (Clicking on your profile picture will do it.)
- Click on the blue ‘Add a profile section’ button.
- Expand the ‘Features’ menu and choose ‘Media’ at the bottom.
- Select your CV file to upload from the window that pops up.
- Hit the ‘Save’ button.
Option 2: Upload a resume to LinkedIn as “Featured Media:”
This is probably what you’re looking for. Your resume will be available on your LinkedIn profile as a separate document. Depending on your privacy settings, anyone logged into LinkedIn may be able to view and download your resume.
On that note, be mindful of the fact that resumes tend to include information that your LinkedIn doesn’t. To maintain privacy, consider making a modified version of your resume that doesn’t include information about yourself or your work experience you don’t want to make public. In other words, you can omit much of your contact information.
Here’s how to upload your resume to your LinkedIn profile:
Step 1: Go to your profile.
Step 2: Click the “Add profile section” button, and expand the “Featured” tab.
Step 3: Select “Media” and choose the resume file you want to upload from your computer.
Step 4. Click Save. Your resume is now available as a featured post on your LinkedIn profile.

Option 3: Add your resume to LinkedIn for Easy Apply applications:
In addition to uploading your resume to your profile, you can save several resumes on LinkedIn to quickly attach your resume when you apply for a job. This is useful if you have multiple career or keyword targets.
Even though some jobs don’t require a resume, we recommend you use both your LinkedIn profile and resume when applying to jobs.
Follow these steps to upload your resume to LinkedIn during the job application process:
Step 1: Go to the Jobs tab in the navigation bar.
Step 2: Search for a job using the LinkedIn Jobs page
Step 3: Find a job listing with an “Easy Apply” icon. Click on the job for more information.
Step 4: Click the “Easy Apply” button and complete the required fields.
Step 5: Select “Upload Resume” to add a resume file.
Step 5: Click “Submit Application.”
Option 4: Share your resume as a LinkedIn post
Many people have opted to share their resumes with their LinkedIn networks in 2021, which can be a good way to ask for feedback. It also serves the purpose of informing your connections that you are looking for a new job.
Here is how you can share your resume on LinkedIn as a post:
- Start a new post from your feed
- Click on “share a document.” This is the fourth and final icon at the bottom of the “Create a post” window. It looks like a piece of paper with the bottom corner folded over. (The other options are a plus sign, picture, or video icons.)
- Choose your file. As in the previous options, you want to include your name in the file name. The file will be available for other people to download as a PDF.
Option 5: Use your resume to fill out your LinkedIn profile
Finally, you can opt to use your LinkedIn as a standalone part of your job search. You don’t need to upload your resume if you already have all the important information on your LinkedIn!
Your LinkedIn has many of the same sections as your resume: a summary, work experience, skills, education, certifications, and volunteer experience. If your LinkedIn is complete, you don’t need to upload your resume as well. You should still use a resume to apply for a job, though.
If you want you can download your LinkedIn profile as a resume.
- Go to the “Me” icon at the top of the LinkedIn page.
- Click “View profile.”
- Click the “More” button on the profile introduction card.
- Choose “Save to PDF” in the dropdown.
But you should not use a hard copy of your LinkedIn profile as a ready resume. Truth is LinkedIn profiles and resumes serve different functions:
- Your LinkedIn profile shows your career history but paints a rather semi-formal picture of your professional self. Why? The purpose of LinkedIn is networking. It lets recruiters check your network and browse your activity on the platform (including posts you’ve shared or commented, profile updates, etc.) so I’d recommend treating it as an addition to your resume—not a substitute.
- Your resume is meant to be a formal overview of your work experience, education, achievements, and career goals. This makes this document more professional—especially when you’re applying for a job in a more traditional industry. Of course, you can still add your LinkedIn profile handle to your resume.
Having trouble uploading your resume to LinkedIn?
If you’re still having trouble uploading your resume to LinkedIn, you may be using the wrong file format. PDFs, .doc, and .docx are all supported.
It’s also possible you’re following the old method to import a resume to your profile’s “About” section, which no longer works.
